Just read the scorecard of the latest IPL match between Deccan and Punjab. I don’t have a dog in these IPL fights, but I have long nursed a sports-crush on Irfan Pathan, whom I think was needlessly put out to the pastures/completely mishandled in the Greg Chappell era. So it hurts when the guy gets a fighting 60 and then loses his wicket near a loss.
Yes, I know Pathan was given plenty of chances to redeem himself in the international arena, and yes, I witnessed his slow turn toward mediocrity. But doesn’t everyone have these sorts of ridiculous attachments to cricketers? I still revere Mohammad Kaif, even though his one major innings — that famous Lord’s match — remains his biggest claim to fame. (I had similar feelings for Ajay Jadeja, and that too only because of the 45 off 25 balls against Pakistan at the 1996 World Cup.)
Anyway, if nothing else, the IPL will prove the perfect ground for both the Pathan brothers to prove themselves and get back. If that happens, I’ll even subscribe to Lalit Modi’s tweet channel.
