A Thousand Words

This is possibly my favorite cricket picture of all time: notice how exhausted both Ganguly and Dravid look, the two ex-captains sitting there drenched in their sweat. But look to their right, as they are, and you see the sprightly Anil Kumble, refreshing himself and ready to go (even though, at 37, he’s a tad older than those two). The contrast is all the more apparent because of their pads; Kumble, the bowler, is not weighted down with similar expectations of stellar form.

Of course, it won’t be long before Kumble himself ends up sitting in this line of succession, watching the ever effervescent Dhoni climb to the greasy top. Still, whoever took this photo has a keen eye: not only do we see the new king on the stage; we also get a hint about how rough this job really can be. (Heavy lies the head, etc, etc.)
