Examining the Cricket World — With Adequate Protection, Of Course

Cricket In The Movies

Critics haven’t responded well to “Darjeeling Limited,” and a friend of mine even insists that it’s nothing more than another white man’s attempt to fetishize India and its supposed “spirituality.” Actually, a lot of people think that.

Still, how can you hate an American film that includes a 2-second mention of cricket? At one point, Adrian Brody, staring out at a city in Rajasthan (I believe), points down below to a small field and says, “They’re playing cricket with a tennis ball.” At this point, the camera shows a young lad slog a ball away. I like that quote because a) Brody, an American character, knows what cricket is; b) he also knows that cricket isn’t played with a tennis ball; and c) he thinks it’s strange that they’re using one (though we all grew up playing cricket with a tennis ball or, when we really wanted trouble, those red rubber balls that bounced strangely).

Oh, it’s nothing much, but a little visibility for the game never hurt.

  1. As you said, a little visibility never hurt the game.

About the red rubber balls- man, the ball stung like the dickens particularly when it hit the fleshy part of the body.
